The National Capital Planning Commission voted 8-4 to greenlight the project after almost 9 hours of public comments, and construction could begin as soon as Thursday.
The news about President Trump's 250-foot triumphal arch hits me with a healthy dose of skepticism. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one: it's astonishing that the National Capital Planning Commission voted 8-4 to greenlight the project, despite almost 9 hours of public comments from members of Congress, veterans, architects and Washington, D.C., and Virginia residents.
The NCPC's Executive Director Heralded Mr. Trump's 'Historic Vision'
NCPC executive director Mark Paoletta recommended approval of the final site and building plans for the structure, hailing it as 'the grandest arch ever built by mankind.' I'm not sure what's more astonishing - the fact that this project is moving forward or the language used to describe it.
A Judge Could Block Construction
But don't get too excited just yet. A court challenge in Washington could delay the Trump administration's plans, and according to a separate filing by the Trump administration, a construction company "may be — but is not necessarily — arranging off-site preparations for construction mobilization in anticipation of permit approval" at the site. It's unclear how soon construction of the arch could start, though the Justice Department said in a court filing last month that it could begin as soon as Thursday.
